The plaque commemorates the Bres Colliery, the earliest deep pit sinking at Llanelli. Sinking commenced in 1794/95 and final abandonment of the pit took place in May 1889.

The plaque is attached to the wall of La Terrazza restaurant in Bres Road (formerly the Bres Arms Hotel), near the spot where the colliery once stood.

Co-sponsor Dr.Symons, formerly of the University of Wales Cardiff, is the author of "Coal Mining in the Llanelli Area 16th Century to 1829" published in 1979 (his wife Menna is acknowledged as playing a fully supporting role including that of Welsh language translator and proof reader).

Malcolm is also co-author, with Robin Craig and Robert Protheroe Jones, of "The Industrial and Maritime History of Llanelli and Burry Port 1750 to 2000", published in 2002.

The unveiling ceremony was first addressed by LCH Chairman John Wynne Hopkins who outlined the purpose of LCH's Blue Plaque Scheme and gave a brief outline of our other projects.

Dr Malcolm Symons then gave a brief talk about the history of the Bres Colliery, detailing its troubled existence and its several owners.

Llanelli Town Mayor Cllr Nigel Bevan expressed his strong support for the work that Llanelli Community Heritage are doing, before unveiling the Bres Colliery Blue Plaque.
