LLANELLI COMMUNITY HERITAGE TRAIL
Llanelli Community Heritage takes great pleasure in putting into place
its first Heritage/Interpretative Panel. The panel is situated near the eastern
end of the Pont d’Agen overlooking the Old Castle Pond (Pond Twym) in Peoples
Park. This is the pilot scheme with many heritage panels to follow in the
Llanelli area. The villages of Furnace and Felinfoel are next.
These Heritage/Interpretative Panels will form a Heritage Trail across
Llanelli and will benefit all the community and tourism as a whole. The
benefit of these panels to local schools will be immeasurable and the existence of this
Heritage Trail will contribute to life long learning and healthy living in Llanelli and District.
The trail will be called the Llanelli Community Heritage Trail.
This first heritage panel depicts the heritage of the Old Castle area with
items such as the site of the Motte and Bailey Castle, Old Castle Works, Old Castle Colliery, The
Carmarthenshire Railway, Raby’s Forge, Raby’s Cottages, Caemaen Colliery, Banc Y
Llong and Alexander Raby.
The panel is 7’ x 4’ in size very robust and a natural colour thus blending
in with its surroundings.
The panel is situated at the eastern end of Pont d'Agen on the edge of the cycle track. It overlooks Pond Twym, the location of the castle, which is now a scheduled ancient monument. In the distance the world famous Stradey Park, home of Llanelli RFC and Llanelli Scarlets, can be seen.
