LCH plans to establish Interpretation Panels in a number of communities in around the town in order that local history is not forgotten. An application for Objective One Funding has been made for panels in five locations:
Phase One :
Pontwym: This site, at Old Castle Pond, is where the Norman Motte and Bailey Castle stood. This panel could also show Carmarthenshire Railway and Tramway, Cae-maen Colliery, Old Castle Tinworks, Old Castle and Erw collieries, Raby's Forge, the Forge cottages and Sandy Tollgate, targeted by Rebecca rioters.
Furnace Square: This panel would tell of Raby's Furnace, which made cannon balls for the Navy in Napoleonic times, local coal mines, Carmarthenshire Railway and Tramway, and Furnace Tollgate, attacked and destroyed during the Rebecca riots.
Phase Two:
Llanelly Pottery: This famous pottery operated near the town centre from 1839 to 1922 and many fine examples of its production can be seen in permanent displays at Llanelli Museum at Parc Howard.
Buckley's Brewery: With the first lease in 1799, the brewery enjoyed nearly 200 years of production, achieving Royal Warrants, until its closure in 1998.
LCH is working closely with the developers to ensure that the Malthouse is sensitively converted to apartments and the Barley Kiln is given a heritage role within the new development.
Bryntirion Hospital: This was the site of Llanelly Workhouse, with important links to the Rebecca Tollgate Riots as well as a fascinating social history.
Detachments of police and troops were billeted at the Workhouse and it was there that one of the Rebecca ringleaders, David Davies (alias Dai Cantwr) was interrogated before being transferred to Carmarthen Jail. It is likely that Dai was held in the Workhouse's holding cell, which is now Bryntirion's stationery cupboard. It still has its original stout metal door with spy holes and a window with bars at the rear.
The Hospital will soon be closing and two buildings have been saved for
inclusion in the proposed housing development: the Entrance building, which contains the prison cell and the Rotunda, the hub of the Workhouse. LCH is working with the developers as the site plans are unfolded.
Interpretation Panels are also planned for other communities such as Machynys and Seaside and LCH looks forward to working there with community representatives and Communities First Officers to establish the necessary funding.
LCH has already been very fortunate in establishing strong links with Communities First at Felinfoel, participating in four events where abundant opportunities have been taken to present the heritage message. Funding has been secured for an Interpretation Panel and several Plaques in the Village; discussions have already commenced with the community and Communities First on their content.
