Llanelli Boys' Grammar School Heritage Corner
Llanelli Community Heritage working in Alliance
with Lovell Partnerships and Former Pupils Association.
Clos Yr Ysgol, the new Lovell Housing development neatly tucked in between Marble Hall Road, Alban Road and Stebonheath Terrace, was the site of Llanelli Boys’ Grammar Technical School (Senior ‘Top’ School) until 1960 when it merged with the Lower School at the Pwll Campus. In 1977 the Grammar School closed when the Pwll buildings became firstly Graig Comprehensive and later Coleg Sir Gar.
There is currently nothing at Clos Yr Ysgol to inform the public of the Top School’s history stretching as far back as 1895 when Sir Arthur Stepney donated two acres of land at Marble Hall for the building of the County Intermediate School for Boys and Girls.
However, all is set to change because Llanelli Community Heritage are delighted to announce Lovell’s donation of £3000 towards the cost of an Historical Panel and resurfacing the Old School’s two Foundation Stones which together with the Panel will form a Heritage Corner generously allocated by Lovell. Considering that the Stones are over a hundred years old, they have borne well the ravages of time, but will receive the skilled attention of Robert Evans, Monumental Mason of T.J.Lloyd, Als Street, before installation at the Corner.
Progress would not have been possible without the substantial gift from Lovell.
Negotiations are underway with the Former Pupils’ Association for their contribution towards the overall Project cost of £4500.
